7 Winning Looks For Your Holiday Party Circuit!

7 Winning Looks For Your Holiday Party Circuit!

It’s that time of year again!  We’re quickly approaching the throes of the ‘official’ holiday season which will be kicked off by Thanksgiving later this week.  Candy canes & mulled cider, anyone? 😉  Your December is probably chock full of holiday invites from work, family, and friends.

While these are pretty fun occasions filled with the joy of holiday cheer, let’s face it –  the weeks, days, and hours leading up to them can be very stressful for you.  Why?  Because you don’t know what to wear!  You’ve got so many different things to consider like: what did you wear last year; what will your friends wear, what’s the party style: casual, cocktail, or formal; and what looks are trending this year?

Don’t Despair, I’m your personal shopper!

To help you out, I’ve pulled seven pieces that offer some variety in terms of fit, style, formality, and price.  See below for a rundown on why I selected each…

7 Winning Looks for the Holiday

Love the Look? Own It By Clicking Here!

Lulus Plunging V-Neck Pleat Georgette Gown – This wine-colored, flowy dress is an easy, yet stylish option for events that are more on the semi-formal/formal side.  The plunging V-neckline and empire waist give the illusion of the top half of an hour glass (remember that highlighting your natural waist is always a good thing!).  The pleated A-line dress provides a gentle, feminine flare that completes the bottom half of the hour glass shape.  Also, empire waist dresses are a great way to camouflage any troublesome midsection areas. 😉

Halston Heritage Cold Shoulder Dress – Still trending from this past summer is the cold shoulder (or cutout shoulder) look!  This scarlet knee-length dress is a great option for corporate parties or playing hostess at your own party!  The cut of the dress is classic with its embellished belted center and thigh-high front slit.  This dress is best paired with a strappy heeled sandal as shown.  Another great choice that creates the hourglass silhouette with a modern twist!

NSR Velvet Midi Slip Dress – Remember in my Fall Fashion Trends video, I shared that velvet was one of the hottest trends for this season!  Well, here’s an opportunity to rock a luxe look in this black crushed velvet midi slip dress.  Once again, the flattering V-neck makes yet another appearance giving you a nice, long look from the top.  This dress isn’t fitted so it gives you some room to breathe after dinner and dessert! 😉 This is a nice minimalist look that’s still classy and feminine!

Ralph Lauren Off-The-Shoulder Sheath Dress – I’m loving this bohemian-turned-classic look.  This fitted, sheath dress features a simple, but elegant off-the-shoulder neckline coupled with ¾ length bell sleeves for a comfortable, yet chic look.  This cocktail number also provides the classic silhouette look highlighting the waist area with its gentle pleats on the left side of the bodice.  This is an LBD that can serve you for a variety of dressy occasions!

Alexis Cold-Shoulder Lace Sheath Dress – This dress is definitely elegant, modern, and sexy all at the same time.  Its shapely sheath style offers subtle visual delights in its overall design.  Made with berry floral lace, this midi is trimmed with a contrasting black lace.  It also features an elegant jewel neckline with a sheer yoke, cold shoulders, a delicate sheer netted band that wraps around the thigh, and a scalloped hem.  Didn’t I say that this dress was eye candy!  Wearing this dress, you’ll certainly turn heads at more formal events.

Mango Cold Shoulder Dress – For my ladies that want a dress that’s easy, fun to wear, and shows off some leg, this dress is for you!  This budget-friendly option is a black, two-tier shift dress that is great for dancing the night away!  This, too, features a cold shoulder that’s balanced with a bateau neckline.  Its contemporary style is carefree and cute at the same time!

Bailey 44 Ruched Jersey Cold-Shoulder Dress – My last selection features yet another cold shoulder!  I really like this dress because of its sleek look and gentle ruching from the waist down.  Ruching is also another clever fashion hack to disguise problem areas as long as it’s not too tight!  This burgundy long-sleeved jersey dress gently highlights curves and is a comfortable, stylish option that’s easy to move around in.  This dress can be paired with pumps or heeled sandals for a chic, finished look!

No matter what you wear for your holiday party soirees, you’ll need a great handbag to finish your look!  When going to these parties, the last thing you want to do is haul your large handbag or tote.  Pare things down and simplify with a stylish clutch.  I’ve included some examples here from Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, and Clare Vivier for some inspiration.  Dark clutches are always a safe option and can be used for many different occasions, but I challenge you to pair your outfit with a clutch that’s a contrasting color, maybe a different hue of the color you’re wearing, or has some bling!  This is the holidays – have fun with it and maybe even have your clutch be your statement piece!

Hopefully, these pieces give you some holiday style inspiration and offer up a few different options for the parties you’ll be attending this season.  Remember that if you need help finding the best look for you, call me at 855-877-8953 to set up a holiday event styling appointment – I’d love to help you look beautiful and own the room!  Happy (early) holidays!

Revealed: The Secret to Chic Style!

Find out the #1 secret to chic style! - Roxanne Carne | Personal Stylist

I’m writing today’s blog as I chill in the Delta Sky Lounge at JFK airport and decompress after a busy weekend of fashion/styling conferences in the ever-so-chic New York City.  This is my hometown (Brooklyn – born and raised!) and it’s always such a treat for me to visit the city every few months.

I love coming here because I always get so inspired by the latest and greatest in fashion trends, the buzz, the energy – just everything that IS the Big Apple.  I love that folks here have no inhibitions about expressing themselves through style – if they feel it, they wear it.  They’re just unapologetic and reveling in every fiber of their style.  #LoveIt

What’s the Secret to Chic Style?

As someone who always feels most comfortable in neutral colors especially black and gray, I definitely felt back at home in more ways than one.  One thing that I have noticed this season is that New York is the land of black everything. Black is the new black!  Black is an understated neutral that looks good on almost anyone (be careful though, for some it can wash you out or make you look older).  Overall, black-on-black is so versatile and just simply the secret to chic style!

I got in on the action myself (I had planned this look ahead of time so my NYC intuition was on point!).  I made my conference and networking rounds in a black round-neck leather jacket, black leggings that were leather from right above the knee down to the ankle (super chic & edgy), and simple but sexy black leather pumps.  I topped off the look with a subtly printed gray/black scarf and a black V-shaped shoulder bag.  Here I am in the pic below styled in this all-black ensemble alongside Linda Rodin, famous celebrity stylist, and Founder/Creative Director of beauty line, RODIN Olio Lusso.  As you can see, we both got the same memo!

Roxanne Carne & Linda Rodin

Roxanne & Linda Rodin, Fashion Stylist & Beauty Entrepreneur

At another point over the weekend, I rocked my black suede, over-the-knee boots – perfect for trekking around the city (yes, they were flats!).  Like me, I saw other women donned in black from head-to-toe and they looked fantastic!  From cropped, long-sleeved lace tops to LBDs, jumpsuits, graphic tees, and black jeans.  All very chic and stylish!

Monochrome Black is Okay!

I have many clients that default to black (you know who you are!) so you are probably very happy to read this post, LOL.  But seriously, even though I usually recommend playing with other neutrals and colors, I’m here to let you know that if you want a quick, surefire way to look chic, it’s totally okay for you to go all black!

So, I’d love to know: how do you prefer to rock black?  Do you go “all-in” and wear it from head to toe or do you incorporate some splashes of color every now and then?  Or perhaps, you’re the opposite and prefer to stay away from black?  Maybe you might want to give it a try?  Let me know by responding to this online post or visiting me on Facebook or on Instagram!

Here’s to you being chic!

My Secret to Look Stunning in a Turtleneck

My Secret to Look Stunning in a Turtleneck

Just because you’re wearing thicker fabrics, knits, and layers in the fall season doesn’t mean that you can’t be stylish!

Enter the turtleneck: a simple, yet versatile top that can be thin and light to wear underneath a jacket or stand on its own with a bit more weight and volume.  Both options provide warmth and comfort for your neck, arms, and torso.

But what’s the best way to rock a turtleneck?

My Secret on How to Kill in Your Turtleneck

Here are my top styling tips on always looking gorgeous when wearing a turtleneck:

Go for a fitted, yet comfortable turtleneck – Baggy, loose turtlenecks are not the business so don’t bring these into your wardrobe.  You know, turtlenecks that are boxy and square-shaped from the shoulders throughout the waist.  Nope, no need for that here!  Why not?  They don’t define your shape or create the illusion of a shape so they’re no use to you.  Instead, select turtlenecks that fit more closely to your body from top to bottom.  They don’t have to be skintight but instead should play up your pretty silhouette and highlight your natural curves.

Go for turtlenecks that offer a long torso – Avoid short-waisted turtleneck tops that end at the top of your pants waist (for regular rise pants).  This gives the illusion of being shorter than you are and visually, it could possibly cut you in half.  Instead, select turtlenecks that go two to three inches beyond that (or a little more dependent on your height).  From the back, you want it to fall just at the top of your bum area.

Stunning in Turtlenecks

Love the Look? Own It By Clicking Here!

Wear properly fitting underwear – I’ve said it a thousand times and will say it a thousand more. Underwear is the most important part of any outfit.  A properly fitted bra is essential to pull off a stunning look with a turtleneck.  Remember, it’s your silhouette we’re talking about here.  The ‘girls’ need to be supported and not droopy in this look (or any, for that matter!).

Keep in mind that you want smooth, shapely lines not only in the bust area, but in your waist area as well!  Fitted turtlenecks are a no-go if you’re looking bunchy underneath.  If you have a little bit of a tummy or ‘rolls’ in your torso area, there’s a fix for that: a control undergarment bodysuit.  Wearing a well-fitted control bodysuit will give you smooth definition and make you look amazing underneath that turtleneck!

Control Bodysuit Underweara

Keep your earring jewelry simple – Save the dangly, chandelier earrings for another outfit.  You’re wearing a turtle-neck, remember?  This is the perfect occasion to wear your studs, pearls, etc. – anything that fits close to the lobe and in understated.  The attention needs to be on the turtleneck and your silhouette.  Don’t distract from this with the wrong earrings.

Sweep your hair up – If you have shorter hair, you’re all set and are officially looking fab with your turtleneck look.  However, if you have longer hair, I recommend sweeping it up into a bun or a ponytail.  Getting your hair off of the shoulders will elongate your look and is the final step to stunning in a turtleneck top!

What Not to Wear – Top Ten Tips!

What Not to Wear – Why You Should Binge-Watch This Show

When you want to unwind, sometimes there’s nothing better than curling up on the couch, cozying up near the fireplace, sipping on your favorite cup of coffee (or tea!), and binge-watching some good TV!  It’s nice to disconnect from the ‘real’ world and watch someone else’s drama unfurl for a little while, right?

Well, I have a binge-worthy styling show to share with you that delivers some drama (and good advice!) on its own – it’s What Not to Wear (the American version) hosted by Stacy London and Clinton Kelly.  Stacy & Clinton deliver 10+ seasons of hilarity, spunk, compassion, and sage styling advice to women who need a full wardrobe makeover and an extra boost of confidence to accompany their new looks.

I love this show because Stacy & Clinton are real and offer some sound styling advice again and again.  I wanted to share their Top Ten Styling Tips with you because they are simple, easy, and good!  You’ve heard me mention in various blog posts or in-person, but this concise list is great for you to live by style-wise! 😉

Top Ten Styling Tips from What Not To Wear

#10 Get a Bra That Fits Well – You hear me harp about this all of the time!  Your underwear is probably more important than your outerwear.  If you haven’t already, please get fitted for a bra – pronto!  You’ll never be able to pull off great looks without a well-fitted/well-sized bra.

#9 Dress Your Age – There’s no other way to break this down, LOL – just dress appropriately for your age.  For my clients, subscribers, and followers, club gear doesn’t cut it.  Dressing your age doesn’t necessarily mean wearing boring, fuddy-duddy looks.  You can look just as captivating in age-appropriate clothing.

#8 Your Clothes Have to Fit – Please, please, please buy clothes that fit you well or enlist the help of a tailor to help get you there!  There’s nothing worse than seeing ill-fitting clothing on women – whether it’s too small or too big.  Remember that you’re pretty much always looking to create a silhouette which is impossible to do if your clothes don’t fit right!

#7 Dress for the Job You Want, Not the Job You Have – For my ladies that are still climbing the career ladder, this is REALLY good advice.  From my HR background, I can tell you that what you wear for work really makes an impression – even at subconscious levels.  Believe me, people higher up on the food chain in organizations are looking.  Wearing well-appointed clothing consistently speaks volumes about you.   Show them what you’ve got not only with your awesome talent but also your style!   Dress for your next role NOW!

#6 Color, Texture, Pattern and Shine Create Visual Interest – If you’re looking to shake things up a bit visually and want to try something different with your look, mix in an element of color, texture, pattern, or shine.  You can have some real fun with this by adding a pop of surprise underneath your jacket or even go bolder with having it be a jacket…or a shoe…or a handbag!  Balance is key here, so don’t go too overboard!

#5 You Don’t Have to Show a Lot of Skin to Look Sexy – You want something left to be desired!  Sexiness is about wonder and mystique (peppered in with an occasional innuendo!).  The long and short of it is that you don’t have to bare all to be considered sexy.  Wearing your look with confidence is all that you need.

#4 Jeans are Supposed to Make Your Butt Look Good – Please don’t wear dumpy mom jeans – they do nothing for you and you know it!  Jeans should always accent your derriere regardless of its size or shape.  A nice curve around your bottom is nicely accented by heels, flats, or boots, for instance.  The only exception here are boyfriend jeans which are meant to be baggy (and frankly, not everyone can pull that look off).  So the next time you think about buying those pair of jeans, swing around and take a look at your backside to make sure everything is in check!  😉

#3 Mom Does Not Equal Frump – Just because you’re a Mom doesn’t mean that you have to look frumpy or frazzled.  Moms are truly wonderful and should always look that way!  Treat yourself to some stylish, age-appropriate looks (remember #9 above).  There are so many clothing options for mothers: from office, to casual, to athleisure – there’s no reason not to looked pulled together at any time of day.  Make an effort to be stylish – do this for yourself!

#2 You Can Show Off Your Personality Without Looking Crazy – For my more eclectic gals, this one’s for you.  Style is personal, it’s fun, it’s creative – it’s based on you.  But there’s a fine line between looking “eclectic: cute and stylish” versus “eclectic: out-to-lunch.”  If no one can understand what you’re trying to accomplish looks-wise, we have a problem.  Don’t be labeled as the crazy lady that can’t dress – that’s not a good look for many reasons!

#1 We’re Always Right – We (meaning stylists) are always right, LOL.  We work with so many women that have so many different body types and size.  Believe me, we’ve seen it all.  We have a trained eye.  Style has a technical component to it and we understand it thoroughly.  When we tell you something looks good, it looks GOOODDDD.  On the other hand, if we tell you something’s not working for you, you need to listen up and let it go.  Don’t fight us – remember that we’re here to help you look your best! J

BONUS TIP:

Clothes should always bring you joy and make you feel beautiful! – There’s not much more to say than that.  If your clothes don’t make you feel this way, honey, you’re in a style rut. But don’t despair – I can help you feel wonderful about your clothes again!  Call me at 855-877-8953 to learn more about how to define your style!

One more thing – all seasons of What Not to Wear are available on Amazon Prime for purchase but I promise, it’s not expensive for some entertainment and style education!  I recommend that you check it out if you’re interested in getting some great styling tips on the comfort of your own couch!  Enjoy!

Essential Closet Storage Tips: Cashmere, Handbags, Fur & More!

Essential Closet Storage Tips: Cashmere, Handbags, Fur & More!

When you look in your closet are you proud of how you store your clothing and accessories?  Do you know the best way to store certain items of clothing?  Often times, my clients ask me for tips on how to store particular pieces so I thought I’d collate a few of them for you!

Proper storage of your clothing and accessories is essential to maintaining a wardrobe you love, protecting your investments, and saving money!  You’ve paid for pretty much everything in your closet so do take good care of what you’ve got.  Okay, let’s get started!

Closet Storage Tips

Suits

For suits that are in regular rotation for the season, keep them dry cleaned in a timely manner and neatly hung up in your closet on suit hangers.  Do not ever store them (or any other item of clothing) in plastic bags – your clothes need to breathe.  For suits that are out-of-season or not worn very regularly, it’s best to keep them in cloth garment bags to avoid collecting dust – yes, dust lives in your closet!

Cashmere & Wool Sweaters

Cashmere & Wool – soft, warm, luxurious and lunch for moths!  To deter moths and keep your cashmere & wool items from looking like Swiss cheese, wrap them in white acid-free tissue paper and place in a cedar chest.  If you don’t have a cedar chest available, no worries!  You can keep these items in a drawer (along with the acid-free tissue paper) with cedar drawer liners or cedar balls to keep these pests away and keep your sweaters smelling fresh.

Formal Dresses

Getting dolled up in ball gowns and other formal dresses is certainly a treat!  You definitely want to keep them looking fresh and ready for their next debut.  After wearing a formal dress, always get it dry cleaned, gently wrap it in white acid-free tissue paper, and store in a roomy, breathable cloth garment bag.

Fur Coats

For my ladies with fur coats, this one’s for you!  Fur coats take a little bit more care when putting away for storage.  In general, they need to be stored in a cool environment (here’s an awesome article that explains why this is so important).  In the warmer months, it’s recommended that you store your coat at a furrier facility because they have climate and humidity controlled storage units that keep the pelt intact.

If this isn’t an option for you, I recommend storing it in a very cool place in your home that isn’t too humid.  Make sure that you hang your coat on a broad, fur coat hanger that will offer enough support for the weight of the coat; its broad neck also support the larger collar.  Again, I recommend storing it in a breathable cloth garment bag to best protect the coat.  Never ever store your fur coat in plastic bags, and never store it with cedar or moth balls as the scent is very difficult to remove and the cedar oils can actually damage the fur.

Leather Handbags

I recommend storing your leather handbags on a shelf in a cloth bag to keep the dust away.  Most designer handbags come with a complimentary storage bag but if you don’t have one, you can easily order it from Amazon (gotta love Amazon!).  But the most important thing to remember here is that you should always keep them stuffed to help retain their shape.  White acid-free tissue works well here but here’s a quick tip.  I love using those small air pillows that come with packaging when you order items from Amazon (or anywhere else).  They make great purse stuffers and it’s a nice green solution, too!

Jeans

For jeans, you can keep them stored on hangers or neatly folded on shelves or in drawers.  Personally, I prefer to hang my jeans as a way to keep folds and wrinkles to a minimum.  But either way is really fine, as long as it’s neat! 😉

I couldn’t finish this blog post without sharing one more general storage tip with you.  Please do not use mothballs in your closet or drawers – EVER.  The scent is extremely strong, you can smell it a mile away, and isn’t pleasant at all.  Please use cedar instead – it accomplishes the same result and is a much better scent!

Storage Item Checklist

Here’s quick checklist on some storage items you may need to pick up (I recommend Amazon!):

  • White acid-free tissue paper
  • Breathable cloth garment bags (various sizes)
  • Cedar drawer liners/cedar balls
  • Broad fur hangers
  • Storage bags for your handbags

I hope these storage tips were helpful to you!  If you love these types of tips, check out a couple more blog posts I have on this topic: How to Care for Your Wardrobe (Part 1) & How to Care for Your Wardrobe (Part 2)

If you have a question on how to store a specific item in your wardrobe, please contact me with your question.  I’m also happy to visit your wardrobe and help you build great storage solutions too!

What’s the #1 Outerwear Essential That You Need in Your Life?

Every now and then I like to share a Wardrobe Essential that I think you should have in your closet. For women’s fashion, I feel that a Wardrobe Essential is a classic piece that looks good on pretty much everyone that also withstands the test of time: it ALWAYS looks good and never goes out of style. When it comes to personal style, classic wardrobe essentials are, well…essential! If you don’t have anything else in your wardrobe, you should have these items for sure!

Today, I’m highlighting the oh-so-lovely and classic Trench Coat! I’ve got to say that this is probably one of my favorite wardrobe pieces of all time. Here some quick, fun facts about trench coats:

  • They’re actually a relic of military dress originally spearheaded by the now-famous fashion house, Burberry
  • These coats were designed to highly functional for warfare – they were waterproof, breathable, and provided great camouflage in certain environments (introducing the popular khaki color!)
  • Over many decades, trench coats made their way from being military garb to highly fashionable outerwear for men and women

Why You Need a Trench Coat in Your Life

I love trench coats because they always look so chic and you can wear them with ANYTHING: jeans, dresses, suits, boots, heels, flats, whatever! They have a great way of dressing up a look, dressing it down, or complementing it just right! The best benefit of having a trench coat is that you can wear it year-round and it always looks super stylish.

The most classic trench coats come in khaki, but you definitely aren’t limited to that color. Trenches come in a variety of colors from bold reds and blues, to softer hues, as well as neutrals like black, white, and gray. There’s an array of fabrics you choose from like cotton, cashmere, and wool; and they come in various lengths that suit your height, personal style and the time of year.

Burberry Classic Trench

Burberry – The Kensington Trench Coat

BURBERRY – Master of the Trench Coat

Ladies, hands down, Burberry trenches are where it’s at. If you’re in the market for a new trench coat, make the investment and get yourself a Burberry. They offer so many different styles, colors, and textures – you can begin your own little collection! Other popular designers such as Michael Kors and VINCE offer trench options as well, but nothing beats a Burberry trench!
