The Outfit That Disappeared: A Stylist’s Dream (or Nightmare) About Wardrobe Readiness

I recently had one of those vivid dreams that felt a little too real at the time, making me wake up and say, “Wow, there’s actually a lesson here.” So, let me take you into that dream...

The Dream

In this dream, I found myself at this hybrid venue—it was part boutique, part stage. I was a featured speaker on a fashion panel. The boutique had generously allowed me to select an outfit from their collection to wear on stage. A few hours before the event, I’d chosen something I loved and left it on a special rack in the boutique. I set it up so I could slip into it just before the event.

But when the moment came to get dressed—cue the panic—I discovered the outfit was gone! Just gone. I searched every rack in the store, wondering if someone had accidentally put it back out for sale. Was it possible that another customer had snatched it up? There I was, with minutes before I was supposed to be on stage, and I had nothing to wear. The sheer anxiety of that moment was so real, even in a dream. And honestly, it was a lot more than anxiety. I felt panic, fear, doubt, worry—truly every negative emotion one could feel. And it felt so REAL.

The Lesson

Now, here's where the metaphor kicks in. After waking up, I realized this dream mirrors something a lot of my clients experience. They find themselves facing big (or even small) life moments, standing in front of their closet, and feel that same panic. They have the opportunity—an event, a presentation, a date—but they don’t feel ready. This happens because they don’t have the right wardrobe pieces on hand. There is NO wardrobe readiness whatsoever.

And that’s where the magic formula for success really becomes apparent: Success = Opportunity + Readiness.

In my dream, I had the opportunity but not the readiness. This made me feel so vulnerable. And that’s precisely the feeling I help my clients avoid. My goal is to ensure that when life hands you that big (or small) moment, you’re not scrambling to find something to wear at the last second. Instead, you’re stepping out feeling confident, prepared, and completely ready to embrace that success.
