Postpartum Body & Style: Moms, You Might Relate to This!
If you’re a mom (or were a new mom at some point), I’m pretty sure you can relate to this. You’ve had your first child, and while you love your new little one to pieces, a little bit of self-doubt might develop when it comes to your postpartum body and image. How does that happen and what do you do about it?
Postpartum Body Issues Are a Real Thing
I, amongst a few stylists across the U.S., was interviewed by The Washington Post on this very topic. Ladies, this is a real thing.
As a Personal Stylist, I’ve worked with many women who’ve had their first baby and experienced a tough time accepting their postpartum bodies. It might be disappointment that their bodies haven’t quite “snapped back” yet or perhaps they don’t even know how to look at their new body – they’re not sure what to wear, how to dress, or where to start when it comes to style.
Then outside influence kicks in – and not necessarily in a good way. We’re constantly bombarded with images of postpartum women that are “fit” and publicly show their quick progress in losing baby weight via social media, entertainment shows, etc. This puts a lot of pressure on many new moms into thinking that they must get their “pre-baby” bodies back as soon as possible. But what happens when that doesn’t happen right away? Or if it never happens? It usually manifests into negativity about one’s body and may even develop into embarrassment or shame.
How Personal Stylists are Helping Women Accept Their Postpartum Bodies
Why do we do this to ourselves? Why not just love the body we have and work with it? Does that mean that you’ll never lose weight (if that’s your goal)? Absolutely not! But what it does mean is that you’re not placing undue pressure on yourself to be a certain size within a certain timeframe. Beautiful women (and mothers!) come in every size and shape. The key is learning how to accept your body – specifically your ‘NOW’ body, work with what you have, and create looks that work for you! No more If This, Then That mentality. Imagine that? 😉
Postpartum clients that I’ve worked with have a complete mind shift when they see (and I mean actually SEE with their own eyes) that they can still be beautiful and sexy with their new bodies when styled right!
